Legislative Update - February, 2022

We’re back in the Statehouse and hitting our stride in our new hybrid mode. Crossover is coming up on March 11th, the date by which House and Senate committees have to vote out bills so that they can move to the opposite chamber for completion. Here’s an update about my committee work, key bills, and state finances:

Clean Heat Standard

Over 1/3 of Vermont’s climate pollution comes from thermal fuel use, primarily from fossil fuels used to heat our buildings and water. My committee is hard at work on a performance standard that would obligate Vermont Gas and sellers of fuel oil and propane to reduce emissions every year. Sellers could do this by delivering a range of clean heat alternatives — heat pumps, weatherization, advanced wood heating – or by displacing some fossil fuel delivery with lower carbon intensity biofuels. This bill is critical to Vermont meeting its emissions reduction requirements under the Global Warming Solutions Act. Learn more.

The Reproductive Liberty Amendment

Last week, the House passed the Reproductive Liberty Amendment (also known as Prop 5) on a vote of 107-41. The amendment would protect every Vermonter's right to make their own reproductive decisions, like whether and when to become a parent, use temporary or permanent birth control, or seek abortion care. The amendment will now become a 2022 General Election ballot measure for all Vermonters to vote on in November.

Redistricting

This year legislative districts will be redrawn based on new census data with the goal of equal representation for all Vermonters. Visit the new redistricting website to view legislative bills and map proposals for reapportioning the House of Representatives and Senate.

NEK Day @ the Statehouse

On Monday, January 24th, I joined fellow legislators and over 100 NEK residents to celebrate our region and advocate its needs. I heard about opportunities and challenges in workforce development, childcare, and comprehensive mental health support. Your priorities are my priorities!

New Legislative Aid

I am happy to announce that I am working with legislative aid Nick Adams, a senior at UVM majoring in environmental science. An avid outdoor adventurer, Nick is deeply connected to Vermont’s natural landscape. As he begins his career, he’s committed to learning more about how best to protect the land. I’m grateful for his work researching policy issues, attending hearings to take detailed notes, creating content for social media, and supporting me with constituent events.
